Whether it’s the iconic tea urn or the faithful water boiler, Burco combines an impressive heritage with a range of contemporary solutions trusted by operators far and wide. With the launch of an innovative new portfolio of autofill water boilers, complete with built-in filtration, we were tasked to plan and execute an industry event that would not only gain excellent publicity, but would also demonstrate the impressive capability of all of Burco’s commercial water boiling equipment.
Having commissioned an independent study of the perceptions of British manufacturing in the foodservice industry, we knew this was a strong, unique selling point of the new range of water boilers. Designed to produce water at the optimum temperature for serving tea, we quickly put two and two together to come up with a comprehensive plan. Tea, the staple beverage of our nation and equipment that’s proudly manufactured in Britain by Burco, this was set to be the basis of our campaign.
The next step was identifying an opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities of a Burco boiler to the industry, and what better way to do that, than by attempting a Guinness World Record? With Hotelympia, the industry’s largest event, just around the corner and the hotly anticipated ‘Hotelympia 10km fun run’ selling out fast, we had a perfect platform to attempt the record, whilst demonstrating the capability of the boilers and giving thirsty industry professionals who had entered the race a welcome cup of tea.
Attempting the ‘Most cups of tea made in one hour by a team of 12’ the Burco team needed to beat the existing record held by Devonshire Tea, of 883 cups. Well publicised before the event, and promoted on the day around the 10km fun run and ExCeL, the venue for the four-day exhibition, an enthusiastic audience gathered. With the stage set and the official adjudicators giving the go ahead, the 12 members of the Burco team spent a spirited 60 minutes putting the boilers through their paces.
As the room filled with thirsty runners from across all sectors of the industry, the team from Guinness World Records announced that the Burco team had smashed the previous record, making a total of 1608 cups, almost twice the original total. Clearly demonstrating the incredible capacity and quality of Burco boilers to an engaged audience, the campaign gained significant publicity and the team went home as official record breakers!
